Why can shoulder movement become painful?

Possible causes include tendon irritation, bursitis, frozen shoulder and injury. Pain with lifting and pain with stiffness may reflect different problems. A clinical assessment is needed before deciding which explanation fits your symptoms.

How we approach your care

  1. Discuss the pattern of pain, medical history, reports and limitations in daily activities.

  2. Select appropriate exercise, manual therapy and functional rehabilitation after assessment.

  3. Review your response and adapt your plan, including home guidance when appropriate.

Sessions, progress and realistic expectations

Shoulder recovery varies with the underlying condition and functional limitations. The clinic’s goal is to support mobility and daily activity, not guarantee unrestricted movement by a fixed date. Share surgery or fracture restrictions before treatment begins.

Typical physiotherapy appointments last around 60 minutes, depending on individual needs. Ask about the proposed treatment time and review schedule for this service. Your total course is decided after assessment.

More about recovery and follow-up

When to seek medical help

Sudden severe pain, inability to move the arm, a changed shoulder shape, major swelling, persistent pins and needles or loss of sensation need urgent medical advice. Seek medical assessment after a significant injury or with fever and feeling unwell.

This is general information, not an individual diagnosis or a complete list of warning signs. Emergency symptoms need medical care, not a routine appointment.

Your questions, answered

Is a stiff shoulder always frozen shoulder?

No. Several conditions can limit shoulder movement. Assessment helps determine suitability for physiotherapy and whether further medical investigation is needed.

Can I book for rotator cuff-related symptoms?

Yes. These symptoms are part of the clinic’s confirmed practice. The plan depends on assessment and relevant medical information.

Should I completely stop using my arm?

General shoulder advice often encourages gentle movement rather than complete rest, but an injury or surgery may require specific restrictions. Follow your treating clinician’s advice.

Why is reaching overhead difficult?

Pain or restricted movement can make overhead tasks difficult for several reasons. Tell the physiotherapist which movements are affected; the symptom alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Will I get a recovery date on my first visit?

The clinician can discuss a plan and review points. A guaranteed recovery date is not appropriate before observing your response.

How long does frozen shoulder take to improve?

Frozen shoulder can cause pain and stiffness for months and sometimes years. Physiotherapy may help restore movement, but the number of appointments and recovery time vary. Gentle, individually advised movement is preferable to forcing strenuous exercises; persistent or worsening symptoms need reassessment.

Can physiotherapy help with neck and shoulder pain?

The clinic assesses neck stiffness, cervical radiculopathy symptoms, shoulder pain and restricted shoulder movement. The plan depends on assessment, and further medical evaluation is recommended when symptoms require it.
