What does dry needling involve?

Dry needling uses thin needles in muscle tissue without injecting medicine. It may be used for some muscle-pain problems as part of a wider treatment plan. It is not suitable for everyone and should be performed by an appropriately trained practitioner.

How we approach your care

  1. Dr. Salima Rahat (PT) provides dry needling at the clinic, subject to an assessment of whether it is appropriate for your symptoms.

  2. Discuss her relevant training, the proposed treatment area and alternatives before treatment.

  3. Agree on a review of benefit and side effects rather than assuming repeated needling is necessary.

Sessions, progress and realistic expectations

The clinic has not supplied a needling-specific session length or repeat schedule. Ask how this technique would support your functional goals and what would change if it does not help. A short-term change in pain is not a guarantee of lasting recovery.

Typical physiotherapy appointments last around 60 minutes, depending on individual needs. Ask about the proposed treatment time and review schedule for this service. Your total course is decided after assessment.

More about recovery and follow-up

When to seek medical help

Soreness, bruising and bleeding can occur, and infection is a risk. Needling around the chest can rarely cause a collapsed lung. New chest pain or shortness of breath afterwards needs emergency medical assessment. Report medicines and health conditions before treatment.

This is general information, not an individual diagnosis or a complete list of warning signs. Emergency symptoms need medical care, not a routine appointment.

Your questions, answered

Is dry needling an injection?

No medication is injected. This differs from an injection treatment.

Can I decline needles and still have physiotherapy?

Ask about alternatives such as therapeutic exercise and appropriate manual therapy. An offered technique is not a requirement for every care plan.

Will one session permanently remove pain?

No permanent result or fixed session count is promised. The clinician should explain how your response will guide follow-up.

What if I am afraid of needles?

Tell the clinician before treatment. Discuss the procedure and alternatives; you should be comfortable with the decision before proceeding.

Do I need to disclose blood thinners or pregnancy?

Yes. Share medicines and relevant health circumstances so the clinician can decide whether needling is appropriate. Do not alter medication yourself.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

Both use thin needles, but their treatment frameworks differ. Dry needling targets muscle trigger points in musculoskeletal care; acupuncture is a separate practice. Dr. Salima Rahat (PT) provides dry needling here. Discuss the proposed procedure and relevant training before treatment.
